Research on surface wrapping of fiber optic cable for aerospace purposes

|
Despite the fact that aviation cable is novel in China, it has been successfully used in developed European and American countries at the beginning of the century.
The concept of “shift from copper cable to optical fiber” presented by some scholars has not been adopted extensively in China. Strengths of aviation cable include resistance to EMI, EMP, HIRF (high intensity radio frequency) and new threats (e.g. directed energy weapons), light weight, and cost effectiveness as compared to high-end phase-compensated cable. However, its weaknesses include challengeable cable protection, limited purchase channels of heat resistant optical fiber and difficult processing.
Current major challenges: (1) develop optical fiber surface wrapping technology to deal with problems including how to control tension and prevent rupture of optical fiber during wrapping; (2) prevent additional loss of optical fiber.

Technical Parameters/Requirements
|
Working temperature: -55℃~+150℃;
Attenuation: 4 dB/km @850 nm, 2 dB/km @1310 nm;
(62.5/125um),
Defection test: there shall be no damage at optical fiber, no crack at sheath, and variation of light transmittance shall be no more than 0.25dB after minimum of 3,000 cycles under 0.454kg weight.

Profile (existing facilities, equipment and products)

Existing facilities: 6 factory buildings with a total area of 16,092m2
Equipment: advanced production equipment including Jennings hydraulic push machine, SPIRKA high speed precision braiding machine, WIEDENBACH ink-jet printing machine, and double layer tandem X-ETFE insulation and extrusion line; advanced testing equipment including HP8753E and N5230A network analyzer, high and low temperature test chambers, and RoHS detector imported from the USA.
