Wearable ECG monitor

Background

l   An arrhythmia is a problem of irregular heartbeat, either caused by the heart beating too fast or too slow, or beating with an irregular rhythm. Arrhythmias can be fatal if the heart is not able to pump enough blood to the vital organs.

l   Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG) is typically used to diagnose any heart abnormalities. While many ECG devices are available in the market today, not many are truly wearable and support continuous realtime monitoring.

Technology Overview

A Singapore-based company has developed a proprietary technology that continuously measures and transmits real-time ECG signals to a computer server programmed to identify abnormal rhythm patterns.

The device can be attached easily to the chest with a specially-designed adhesive pad. It is practically inconspicuous when worn, allowing patients to go about their lives without any disruption. The data is transmitted via Bluetooth to mobile devices and can be accessed through a convenient mobile device application (App).

Any anomaly will be brought to the attention of physicians, empowering them to consider the next course of treatment for the patient. Physicians can also access the data anytime [i.e. remote monitoring) through a secure physician portal, even while the patient is wearing the device. The product has been tested in clinical setting and is undergoing regulatory approvals and certifications.
